Subject: Woods/Hybrid

Curious as to why 1 iron doesn’t have a hybrid line? The smaller profile woods look similar to hybrids… why not make them the same length/lie as to the irons?… especially since people use the woods to replace the long irons

Trent,

The reason that golf companies offer hybrid irons is simply because the "long irons" included in a set are so difficult to hit. Consequently, these companies increase sales by their customers using the "long irons" they've already purchased as tomato stakes in their gardens and then purchasing hybrid irons to replace them.

We have never played this game since our #3 and #4 irons are as easy to hit as the wedges within their set.

Yeah, that makes sense. Do you think you'd be able to shorten the woods to iron length and still get enough distance out of them?

Trent,

Trent,

There is a distinct difference in design function between irons, fairway woods, and drivers. An iron is designed to pinch the ball against the turf using a down and through type of swing which requires an upright swing plane and a descending swing arc into the ball. On the other hand, fairway woods are designed to sweep the ball from the turf which requires a flatter swing plane and, hence, a longer club length than an iron. A driver is designed to sweep a ball that is teed up 1" to 2" off the ground which requires an even flatter swing plane than a fairway wood and, hence, a longer club length than the other woods within a set.

So a hybrid would be an iron swing… seems like that might help me. I’m struggling to get my 5 iron in the air. I’ve heard it’s because I don’t swing hard enough to create enough backspin

Trent,

A hybrid is longer than an iron and requires the same swing you would use with a fairway wood. You are not getting your #5 iron in the air because you are, more than likely, swaying past the ball through impact. This is the case with 90% of golfers.
