Subject: Struggling with the woods

I got my set of 1 Iron clubs, driver down to lob wedge, almost two months ago. My set includes the 3,5,7 woods. I've been loving the driver and irons, but I just haven't been able to get the woods to work consistently. I'm topping the ball a lot, and when I do get a good strike, I don't seem to get a ton more distance than my 5 iron. I've experimented with the ball position in my stance a bit and focused on sweeping the club off the turf, but so far I just can't hit them right.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Matt,

Topping the ball with fairway woods is indicative of too upright a swing plane. You want the feeling of skipping a stone across a pond when swinging woods (side arm toss).

Also, when hitting the fairway woods bear in mind that in order for the ball to go up you must hit down. Obviously, you do not want to hit down with fairway woods using as steep an angle as an iron, but you do have to hit the ball with a slightly descending blow. If you simply try to sweep a fairway wood, you will tend to hit fat shots or top the ball frequently. Concentrate on hitting the ball first with your woods as opposed to sweeping the clubhead across the ground through impact.
