Subject: Hummer, waterfowl question...

The following was posted on the other forum I'm on, but so far, no one's been able to shed any light on this girl's problem. I replied to her that I knew of someone (you) who might be able to help, and if I got a reply, I'd let her know. Here's the post she made:

"Hi,
I am hoping someone can shed light on why Gabby my gosling passed away a week ago. I am new to keeping poultry, so am really keen to know if it is something I did or didn't do or something that could be prevented in the future. We only had Gabby for 2 weeks. Gabby was hand-reared. We kept her in a box inside with sawdust, and took her out in the garden for walks! The water was in a bowl changed 1-2 times a day and she wasn't cleaned out religiously, but when it looked too much or damp it was changed. About a week before Gabby died we noticed gooey frothy spit or something from the beak, (only a one-off). Then last Sunday I took her out of her box for a walk in the kitchen and was really weak and floppy. took outside for fresh air and seemed to fall over a bit and want to 'cuddle'! Poo was also runny and sulphourous smelling, gave her feed (pellets (from the farm we got her from) - which we had found a maggot in?!) she then started to be sick and so we took to a vet who gave antibiotics and antisickness and said didn't have a lot of meat on her. Took her home seemed to perk up a little. The vet said just feed her water solution (with nutrients in). She became more chatty and responsive. Next morning had to force feed a bit of water, then her voice became croacky and she seemed to have gone downhill. Took back to vet who said it was good she had lasted the night and talked about worming her and we decided to leave her there for him to rehydrate her. An hour later he phoned to say she had died and he hadnt had a chance to treat her yet. The vet couldn't really explain why (dont think he was poultry expert) He said she may have had salmonella already when we got her and it just culminated. He said with birds it all happens very quickly! Another factor is that she did feed outside on the grass, and there was some loose ivy around which she may have eaten?! Am really cut up about it as she was our pet and a baby. Even when she was ill i'd speak to her and everytime she would chirrup in response even at the end. We also have 2 ducks which we bought 1 week before she died but she didnt live with them as was too small and could get out of the coup!
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks,
Kirsty"

If you have any ideas on this, Hummer, would you please let me know? Thanks a bunch!
