floor 6

There’s a floor at the hospital you can only get onto
by way of a service elevator.
One wouldn’t arrive by mistake.

Check in at the nurses’ desk
and they’ll unlock the doors.
Once you’re in, you’ll be safe,
they’ll be safe.

Charlie, with rhinestones in the black rims
of her glasses, hadn’t slept for three days.
She liked to walk.

“I guess walking is a crime now,” she said
as we walked the halls end to end,
caged window to caged window.
She’d been walking the night they brought her in.

“And so what if I’m manic? Why change it?” she’d said.
“Maybe that’s just me.” And we talked of white rooms
where we’d bloom like purple roses where gems
sleep in thorny stems. We walked half a mile.
Forty two times end to end.

Kent kept to himself. He spoke, with a blush
during group time, of loyalty and honor and truth.
He gave me a cigarette when I got smoking priveledge,
and we talked of writing and exchanged titles
for unwritten books. “Most writers aren’t writers
by choice,” he said.

We were safe there, the manic, the writer, and me;
there where you’d have to be crazy to want to stay.
And it’s not that I want to go back there.
It’s just that I don’t want to be here.

*needs work on the ending maybe? not sure*
