There used to be "best newcomer" trophies for each team dance, which was for a couple who had never danced team at SUDA before - both members had to be eligible. This was determined by who had made the most recalls, or if a tie, who had gained the most marks in the last round. If still a tie, it was a tie!

And basic steps are those as defined by the BDC rule book. "Novice" steps probably refers to only being able to dance these steps up for beginner & novice on the Open circuit. I think they include any steps up to and including Gold medal.
