The trouble with the combined semi-final is that it doesn't eliminate anyone from the previous round (the finals of the two competitions) and therefore wastes time. And when you're talking about two 4/5-dance competitions, that's a lot of time being wasted.

Ideally, we need a system whereby the early rounds have both ex-students and students in them, and the sytem "magically" sorts out the top 6 ex-students, the top 6 students, and the top 6 all-rounders, without having a wasted round. Ali - do you have any ideas?

Due to the amount of confusion on the floor, the amount of time the judges require per couple increases as the number of couples increase. To exaggerate,
24-couple heat - Time required: 3 minutes 30
12-couple heat - Time required: 1 minute 30

And the improved marking could easily reduce the number of rounds required...
