And therein lies the cause of all the arguments:

Some societies are very dancesport-focussed - to them, Offbeat and Rock'n'Roll are either A) a waste of time, getting in the way of more important competitions, or B) something light-hearted for the Dancesport competitors to do in their free time.

Other societies teach a wide range of dancers - to them, Offbeat and Rock'n'Roll are competitions in their own rights, which deserve to be taken seriously. Looking at the debate, it's fairly obvious which side each person is on.
