I'm ex-Warwick and have no connections with the current committee so I can't give you any explanations for what's going on now. But I can give you a bit of history (having organised the comp way back in 1997 ...) and I hope that's of some interest.

The venue has always been one of the trickier parts of the Warwick comp. We've had 4 venues since its start in 1994:

1994/95: Chesford Grange Hotel, Kenilworth
[Lovely venue but they hiked the price massively (£3000+) after 1995 and it was no longer a viable option at all.]

1996/97: Butterworth Hall, Univ of Warwick Campus
[OK venue and convienient but really expensive, about £1400 in 1997 for a part-university owned hall. There were lots of representations made that a university society should not have to pay near-market rates, but there's lots of demand for the Warwick Arts Centre venues and no headway was made. Became very hard to get a Saturday booking because of higher-profile events in this hall.]

1998/99: Corby Civic Centre
[Cheaper and OK, although I thought it was a bit dark and, dare I say, depressing. Significantly better value than the Butterworth Hall, about £700 in 1998. Corby decided that it could no longer afford to maintain the ballroom - significant investment would have been needed to renew the dance floor which had reached the end of its life.]

2000-present: Wicksteed Park, Kettering
[After my time so I can't really comment. I went once, and agree that the dance floor is definitely on the small side.]

So has anyone got any good suggestions for venues in the Midlands. There's the great advantage that being central it's not too far for any uni to travel, but venues really have been hard. I know that Warwick always really would have loved to hold their comps in the Tower Ballroom Birmingham, but that was just too expensive to consider.

Finally, several people have pointed out that no-one currently at Warwick follows this forum, and someone really ought to. Maybe someone could prod the committee at Warwick ...

Chris
