Subject: how best to learn competitive dancing...

The new season is here, lots of beginners start to dance. What's the best way to learn for someone completely new? I think there's two extremes:

a) technique first (practiced a lot in the US and to some degree in Germany etc.): Teach only very very basic steps in the first one or two years, but work hard on the basic technique...

b) learning by doing (essentially what beginners do if they go straight onto the main-team in Oxford for example): Start doing "exciting choreography" pretty much from the start. Emphasis on choreography and presentation, details of technique are taught later...

The problem with a) is that you loose a lot of people who are very keen and excited about dancing by making them do the basics over and over and over again. The problem with b) is that you can get into bad habits before you learn the proper way of doing things.

Personally I enjoyed doing the exciting stuff early on and that then made me want to learn the technique, but I know a lot of people disagree... any opinions on the right mix?

Robin
