I must disagree with Tim here - I think a simple rule (as opposed to unwritten guideline mis-understood by many) would avoid the massive peer pressure that is applied to some couples, often unjustly, becuase of the vested interest of others.

Since Tim mentioned me I will explain my case as an example of the uglyness that can happen. Helen and I danced novice one year (made a final), intermediate next year (made a final) and advanced the following year (no gaps in-between). As soon as it looked like we would do well in intermediate there was suddenly a massive amount of peer pressure to not dance intermediate at IVDA. How unfair is that? If you are an intermediate at the start of the year, work hard and do well you should not be penalized by missing the nationals (i.e. dance up at IVDA and miss your chance at possibly winning IVDA).

In my case "peer pressure" involved advanced dancers from big unis complaining to me personally and my team captain, ex students constantly suggesting dancing up, potential rivals moaning behind my back, being harrassed just before I danced a round at IVDA... Lets not get rosy eyed about the uni comps - there ARE a few people who want to win at all costs and hate it when they don't.

A clear rule would kill off this unacceptable, and widely unjust peer pressure. A dancer would be able to say "I am dancing in the correct category" and that would be end of story.

Don't get me wrong, I doubt if such peer pressure is widespread - it would only be directed at those few in a position to make finals. Also most people at uni comps are nice, friendly and supportive :)

I would suggest the rule be something simple like "If you make a final at SUDA/IVDA/NUDA you move up NEXT YEAR". Thus you can claim your justly earned placings this year and move onwards to the next category the following year. This rule can be enforced, and should be by exclusion/retro-spective removal of title, by checking last years results.

Stuart

PS I you want to discuss my personal case email me rather than bore this board with it.
