Now this is where I disagree. If you're "an intermediate" at the beginning of the year, you should dance intermediate at the beginning of the year. If you get much better, you should dance advanced, whether it's next year or next comp.

Similarly just because you made a NUDA or SUDA int. final this year does not mean you are going to be advanced next year. In fact with a new partner, no dancing from March to October, you might be a lot worse...

Beginner / non-beginner is a distinction of status, like student / ex-student or amateur / Pro.
Intermediate / Advanced on the other hand are just different levels.

As an example: Technically Florent had every right to enter the intermediate (and win it). Though seeing they came 2nd in the A-team match suggests to me that they should really be in the advanced category. Similarly Scott could have entered any level he liked (don't know about Sarah), yet it would have been ridiculous had he chosen to do anything other than Advanced.

In summary: there are two views on the circuit as to who should do what level:
1) the best x dancers should do advanced
2) those that fulfil certain set criteria based on previous years results should do advanced.

Each group will find some of the other they can accuse of "dancing down". Personally I belong to group 1 ...
