I really don't think anyone is going to encourage a system where you have to declare that you are not eligable to make the final!
OK so imagine there are twelve couples that are of mixed ability, i.e. one person is advanced standard other is novice, so they decide to do int. They all declare that they are not eligable for the final.
Result? the competition grinds to a halt at the semi-final when the judges are told to pick none from the twelve couples. Not the most spectacular of events.

Also, thank you for the compliment that I looked better than some advanced couples at IVDA. My partner and I had not done any non-basic ballroom all year and decided to enter intermediate on the day. We did basics and got to the final (coming 7th). Part of our success was the confidence with which i approached the event. I would not have danced so well if i knew that i was not allowed to make the final no matter how well we did! Equally, we would have been very out of place in advanced, wihtout costume OR routines!
Trying to impose rules on entries would have forced us to dance advanced (= not dance at all) or only be allowed to make the semi. Either way would have denied my partner and myself the obvious encouragement that reaching a ballroom final at the nationals brings. (Whether or not it is meaningless as it is only intermediate...) Thoughts?
