Subject: Miss American Starlet Pageant

Normally I don't complain about pageant results but I feel that I should share this years experience at the Miss American Starlet National pageant. Typically, all of the judges are listed in the program book. This year, there were several judges that were not mentioned. Turns out, these judges that weren't mentioned are the mothers/fathers of current queens. Also, a few of the judges were either past contestants and mother's of past contestants. All of the "friends" of those contests at least reached the top 10.

One of the directors and a 2 friends of contestants, were sitting in the audience during the competitions writing down the numbers of the contests who they felt should be in the top 10. A few people were sitting close enough to them to hear and see some of the numbers which were written down. Sure enough, those contestants were the ones in the top 10.

Also, in the Tiny Miss & Baby Miss category, there was a big controversy. A mother had a daughter in each of these categories. She was also a "friend" of the judges. She wore the wrong numbers through out the entire pageant so when she was on stage there was 2 of the same number contestants. This all played out on the day of the finals. Both of her daughters placed in the top 5. She was not disqualified or penalized in anyway for wearing the incorrect number.

It was also told to a contestant who was wearing a cast due to a broken arm, that the cast should be covered up or else points would be deducted. It was also told to multiple parents on the night of the finals (while waiting to go on stage) that since they were not wearing "formal" wear, (fancy evening gown or tuxedo), that their child would not be considered for the top 10.

This pageant also has a second pageant called the "Pacific Island Princess". This takes place during the bathing suit portion of the pageant. The top 5 competitors are entered into a pageant in Hawaii next May. Contestants from Hawaii are not allowed to participate since they have their own prelims. Well, one of the contestants from Hawaii was called for the Pacific Island Princess award. After bringing this to the attention of the directors, it was said that this was going to take a couple of weeks to sort out since the scores needed to be figured out and the sheets were locked in the office. No more than 5 minutes after that was said, it was announced that they had the results and again the winner was a "friend".

Now, the thing that made it so obvious that they were picking friends was that some of the kids who made it to the top 10 were absolutely terrified on stage. Some of them actually hid their faces from the judges, cried (babies & tiny miss) or were totally shy.

It was also stressed by the directors that they are looking for "natural beauty" and that make up on contests under the age of 10 will be frowned upon and points deducted. All of the kids who won and those who were in the top 10 were wearing a ton of makeup.

I know of at least 10-15 parents (if not more) who will not be participating in this pageant again. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that my daughter should have won but I think it is wrong that we as parents pay all of this money to have a fun and FAIR competition, only to be disappointed and discover that it is rigged. The directors of this pageant have done a great job of covering up the stuff that occurs behind the scenes. It took us 3 years to figure this out. Some of the other parents who just discovered this on Sunday had been participating the pageant for 5+ years before they caught on.

I feel bad that I had actually promoted this pageant and encouraged other parents to enter since it was one of the few "fair" pageants that are out there. This is also one of those pageants that the same group of kids, family members, and close friends, continue to win year after year.

Please let me know if anyone has experienced the same thing at this pageant or if this was just one of those "fluke" years.

[> Unfortunately - I don't think a year has gone by (at least in the last 3-4) that similar comments have been made. Unfortunately - for whatever reason - people either forget what happened after a year has gone by or something else and they continue to go back. I remember a few moms from last year commenting that the pageant was horrible - but then either went back this year or made comments that they wish they could have gone. I don't know what the deal is with this pageant - but keep this in mind when everyone talks about going next year. It isn't a fluke - people just seem to have very short memories. -- ..., Tuesday, August 17, 09:32:04am

Well, where do I Start? I am completly appaled at the fact that there was a number of things that happened at this pageant that were totally wrong. How does a child with fake teeth(when it stated no false anything in the mandatory competition) and a child with a bad attitude with the judges make the top ten? Lets face it, there is something going on that is not right. It appears to myself as well as several other people I have talked to that the ones who make it are the ones that are "in " with the directors, and who the directors/judges want to make it. I am very upset with this pageant and will never do it again!! How about the fact that there is also not very good supervision with the girls when they are at rehearsal otherwise a girl would not be able to hit another one and continue to be allowed to be mean and hurtful to other contestants.

I think I know exactly which contestant you are speaking of with the "bad attitude". I believe she is in the "Little Miss" age group. I heard horror stories from some girls about what happened at the rehersal. She was in the pageant last year and did basically the same thing.

I am actually considering filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Miss American Starlet is listed with them. Maybe, if enough of us file complaints something will be done. I just don't want to see any more first timers get sucked into this pageant only to be ripped off and disappointed. I don't know how to reach enough moms to make file complaints effective. Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, what I am interested in is looking at the videos from the pageant and then looking at the girls who got in the top 10. I want to compare them to the rest of the girls during the My Style and Party Wear events. I can gaurentee that there are some that should just not be up there. I am also interested in getting the names of the winners for the past 10 years. I can bet there will be some trend.

We are also able to call the office to get the scores. The husband of the pageant director said that the scores will be available this week. I have not yet been able to reach anyone though. Please let me know if anyone is successful with that.

Yes, the girl was in the Little Miss age group. I am planning on filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Yes, I watched the videos and there was girls that made the top ten that did not know how to model or know what to do on stage and had fake teeth, and one girl who modeled with a twisty walk that was over exaggerated, just to name a few. There was also a girl in the younger age group that was pinching and hitting the other girls, and she was in the top ten for that age group! The list of unacceptable actions and unfair decisions by the judges goes on and on and something has to be done to stop this system from cheating the girls who truly deserve more than they have been given!

Re: Miss American Starlet Pageant Win or lose...we keep going back because we have an INCREDIBLE, FABULOUS, FUN time...The Hotel is in Palm Springs and it ROCKS big time! For my family, the whole cost of the pageant is worth it just to be staying in that hotel, relaxing, and swimming. My kids love it. The parties are awesome, the staging is great...I truly enjoy finals night even when one of mine doesnt make it into top ten. We will continue to go regardless of the outcomes because this is the one pageant all year that my kids cant stop talking about and BEG to go back....and hey...if they are happy, then I am happy...thats what is all about for me. We go and have a good time as a family and when we dont come home with the title we wanted, my kids really could care less. And when they do win a title I dont make a huge deal out of that either because there are way more important things in life that I make a bigger deal over like when they learn to say their prayers for the first time, say their ABC's without messing up, learn to tie their shoes, when they first learn about Jesus and truly start to understand about Him... Those are all things that are just way more precious to me than bringing home a pageant title. So maybe that is why I have a different perspective on this..I dont know. I guess all I can say to anybody that feels like they were robbed or cheated out of something DONT GO BACK! That is the best message that you can send, maybe some of you are right about some things being "rigged" in some contestants favor...I dont think it was rigged but then again I dont know for 100%sure that is wasnt. If you are unhappy, dont go back and dont recommend the pageant to anyone. Or better yet, instead of coming on these boards and whining...if you truly believe something unfair went on as some of the posters have indicated, then take it to the BBB or take it to the police...If the pageant was truly "rigged" then that is criminal, right? Take your charges to the police if you really believe what you are saying and it all isnt just sour grapes.

All that I can say is the people on this board ARE NOT WHINING! If you have fun at this pageant then great for you , but I know there are a lot of pageants out there that are better and that are fair, for far less than this pageant costs! The hotel is not the important part of the pageant and why would you enter a pageant if you dont want to win? There are other things that are important too besides winning but come on, noone enters their child in a competition just to stay at a big hotel. I would rather take the kind of money that this pageant costs and do something better with it. I can think of a lot better places than Palm Springs to spend my vacation! If you read the posts you will see that some people are going to or already have taken it to the Better Business Bureau.

People are not whining. We are simply expressing our opinions of what occurred this year. If you have fun at the pageant, then by all means continue to go. I am not saying that no one should participate just because of our experience. I feel that if something fishy is going on then it should be made known so that participants can make their own decision as to whether they will go back or not. I would hope that someone would do the same for me. I personally like to research a pageant system before I participate. These aren't cheap, as we all know.

I take my daughter because she enjoys being on stage and meeting new people. She doesn't pout or get upset if she doesn't win. I have gone to the BBB regardging this pageant. I don't go into a pegeant expecting my daughter to win. BUT I do expect her to have an EQUAL CHANCE at winning.

If you reread the posts, they weren't complaining that their child didn't win. They were about the way the pageant is being run and the half truths and lies that are told by the directors.
