It seems like you're conflicting yourself in your last statement-we have to teach them, but it's up to them to learn English? It should be a joint effort, UP TO A POINT. Younger students generally do not have a problem picking up a new language (or anything else new, like music or court reporting), so immersion after a brief transition period (no more than one year) seems to make sense. Older students present a bigger problem: 1) They will have more difficulty learning a new language; 2) they are often (not always) more resistant to learning it, and 3) these students are much closer to entering our work force, where it SHOULD be assumed that you read, write, and speak English if you want a career, not a McJob. The problem, then, is threefold-find the way to get them Anglicized QUICKLY, COST-EFFICIENTLY, and EFFECTIVELY. As I observed at a previous job, many ESL programs gear their programs toward getting Maria a job at McDonald's, when she is capable of being an architect. How we handle this situation in the next 5 to 10 years will have a tremendous impact on our future as a nation. I usually have easy answers, but this one has be puzzled...
