I agree that you can get a first rate education at pretty crummy colleges, but I, for one, could not have done so because I did not know the lay of the land. I didn't know how to pick courses to accomplish that AND NEITHER DID THE ADVISORS.

I got a first rate undergrad education the easy way, from a first rate school, where the requirements are such that you can't avoid whole chunks of human knowledge or avoid writing papers or...well, you get the idea.

Would I have avoided the challenging stuff if I could have? Sure. I was scared to death. I was just trying to survive without any survival skills.

Let's say you beat all those odds and do get a first rate education at a crummy college. How do you prove to the graduate admissions committee that you have done so?

I'm not saying give up on them if they don't have ivy coming out of their ears, but I am saying send them down the most reliable path, the best marked one.
