"I can understand...but can not." That kind of sums up where I am at, and I am a lawyer who had been thinking about it seriously almost 30 years....

I do disagree with those laws about what you can carry being ridiculous. They are absolutely necessary, because the alternative is putting the burden of proof on the government to show where an eagle feather came from, and that would make the laws protecting eagles unenforceable---the government can't prove that unless somebody saw the perp shoot the eagle.

So you protect eagles or you don't. If you don't they're goners. They were almost goners anyway.

So we have this dopey permit system. I have some eagle parts for which I have the paper and some for which I don't .

I have been awarded several eagle feathers in the traditional way, and I am proud of that. In a sane world, I would wear those feathers in my hair on special occasions as the badges of honor they are--just like a soldier wears his medals. Because I don't want the grief, the feathers stay in my closet and get a little bit of use sometimes if I burn sage--privately.

But I can't go along with repealing rules that would result in extinction of eagles.... So I know...but I don't know.

Steve
