Steve:

9/11 was a real tragedy, but for the first few days following this I felt hope for the first time in my life for our country. People of all races were finally uniting as Americans and displaying their flags proudly. But then the flags started getting bigger. A large group from my neighborhood went over to the local mosque with their flags and began taunting the Arab community. My son's friend, Mohammed, (a Jordanian, whom I'd known since they were in 2nd grade) was pulled from his car at a stop light and beaten. At school, the kids taunted all the Arab kids -- seemingly with the blessing of the school.

Mohammed committed suicide one year ago on December 25. He was like a son to me, and he spent most of his time at my home. He was #11 from a family of 13 children. One day when he was little he looked at my dog and asked "did you get her because you couldn't have any more children?" He couldn't understand why we only had one child-lol.

My flag is no longer on display -- I took it down shortly after of 9/11. The more I saw the words "Proud to be an American" the more I felt ashamed to be American. In my eyes, the American flag had become the Confederate flag that the white supremacists fly. It disgusts me now, and I doubt I'll ever display it again.

Has anyone ever questioned WHY they hate us so? I'm so sick of the excuse that it's because we are "free." It couldn't have anything to do with our overindulgence, arrogance, and the fact that we feel compelled to dictate how others (non-Christians, non-democratics) run their lives and countries -- naaa, that couldn't be the reason.

The more I think about it, the more I want to move to Canada.

Kathy
