Remember the immense international goodwill we had going for us after September 11? All gone.

Remember the debate with Gore about whether to cut taxes with the budget surplus or make a rainy day fund? Well, the suplus is gone and it's raining.

(When will those bozos learn that if you cut taxes when times are good the result is always that you have to raise taxes when times are bad, when you can least afford it! Unless of course balancing the budget is not something you care about in which case you cut taxes rain or shine to get elected...)

This war is not about weapons of mass destruction. Bush doesn't give a hoot about WMD on the ground in Iraq. If it was about WMD, we would have a lot more support in the region.

It's about the stategic need to occupy Iraq. Not just for the oil. We need a much larger base of operations in the region than Kuwait can offer, and we need one where we don't have to ask permission to act.

From there, we can strike Iran ("axis of evil," remember?) and keep a close eye on old Soviet nukes.

Bush is ginning up a legalistic reason to pursue strategic goals and Iraq is trying to tie him up in the legalities. But in the end, we are going to war unless the US occupies Iraq without a war. Every time Bush changes his story about the reasons, this becomes clearer to the Europeans.

They are beginning to feel like Victor Frankenstein and wondering if the lab has a back door.

I feel like it is 1939 and I'm living in Germany.
