Hey Tso,

I am ignorant of this situation.

Is this guy, seriously, talking about a Sun Dance in MISSOURI???

Who will dance? Who will lead it? Why would Plains Indians dance thirsty where the humidity is so high? If it's anybody other than Plains Indians, what is the point? It's not their ceremony.

The Sun Dance is dangerous when everything is done right. I cannot imagine how it would be if things are done wrong.

Now, I know that the people to whom the ceremony belongs will be most pissed off, but those of us who have no place in that ceremony might consider this: if some Wanabi dies attempting to gain this distinction because he was not physically, mentally, or spiritually prepared (which damn well could happen) all Indian religion takes a public relations hit.

Why do I think so? I still remember the stuff the newspapers wrote when a white woman died in an alleged "Native American sweat lodge" in Texas.

Anybody who knew anything would catch on to the bogusity when they read she was in there by herself, but the stories were not written by or read by people who knew anything.

Real Indians were putting out fires over that for a month.

This is bad enough and could get worse.

Steve Russell
