Yeah I heard last night. Pretty devastated to tell the truth and even though I have not seen today's papers I would guess there are a few hacks already sharpening their knives.
For me this is the kind of short termism which blights the English game. I really do feel huge progress has been made over Hussain's tenure. I understand that he has little to do with it, but the changes in domestic cricket structure, player contracts, creation of the Academy, etc have all come, although far to late, in a fairly short space of time.
As a captain Hussain has been superb. On the pitch, from pretty much his first game in charge until halfway through the summer India series he was as good a captain as any I have seen, although my experience is pretty limited.
However there are very ligitimate critisisms made of him. As a batsman he is limited, often impulsive and has a nasty habit of getting bogged down. Yet he has an exceptional ability to seperate his own form from his captiancy. In Pakistan and Sri Lanka he simply did not merit a place in the team on form. However his captiancy was superb and the magnitude of only losing one test from the six, and winning three, is far to often underplayed.
People often criticise him for failing to support his players but to tell the truth I reckon this is a bit of a joke. Numorous players have come out and praised his leadership styles and the way new comers such as Trescothick, Hoggard, Anderson, etc have settled in goes a long way to proving that. He is tough, and I doubt he mollycoddles anyone, but frankly if your are playing at that level you can expect inspiration, doggedness and support from your captain. If you need a surrogate mother then you should be looking somewhere else.
Hopefully this will help both his form as a skipper and player in test matches.
I agree with Jaf that as an ODI batsman he won't really be missed. However after the next 5 or 6 ODI's we may realise that no matter how inventive a captain you are, you need an attack that can offer a constant threat, and at present England don't have that on good batting tracks.
I don't have any heros as I tend to believe the term is a bit false. However there is no sportsman or woman that I have more admiration for than Hussain. He is gutsy, honest, determined and brave. He has had to do a lot more than anyone who is simply a captain of a sports team has any right to expect simply because he has had to step in where others have proved to be lacking.
God knows who the next ODI skipper will be. The only other player involved in international level who in my opinion would be up to it is Butcher, and he aint much of a choice given he doesn't play in the one day stuff. The best bet available is Collingwood, but he really doesn't have either enough experience in terms of captaincy or caps to be a realistic choice. Trescothick or Vaughan then........great
