Richard has declared so many times that his musical influences were the three B's: Beatles, Bacharach and Beach Boys.
Well, the Carpenters have covered 10 Beatles songs(not necessarily Beatles compositions*): Ticket to Ride, Help, Baby It's You*, Please Mr. Postman*, Can't Buy Me Love(live recording for YNP radio program), Nowhere Man, Goodnight, I Want to Hold Your Hand (maybe a Carpenter home recording, see Coleman book page 53), Eleanor Rigby (page 59, Joe Osborn garage recording), Every Little Thing (page 60, instrumental recorded at RCA).
To be continued.....

From Bacharach-David, the Carpenters performed 4 songs and 4 medleys : Close to You, Baby It's you, I'll Never Fall In Love Again, Somebody's Been Lyin', the medley from the Carpenters album, the medley from the MMM TV special, the live medley that includes Any Day Now and the medley from the MYOKOM TV program.

And from the Beach Boys, the Carpenters covered only 4 songs(not necessarily Beach Boys compositions*): Fun,Fun,Fun, Little Honda, Johnny B. Good*, Good Vibrations (mixed with the song Comin' Through The Rye from the Very First Carpenters TV Special).
Did all of you know this Carpenters fact?

I have heard every song you've listed, with the exception of I Want to Hold Your Hand, Eleanor Rigby, Every Little Thing.
Wasn't the Carpenters' recording of "Eleanor Rigby" destroyed in a fire at the Osborne home? I think I read that somewhere.

There was a fire. It's stated in Coleman's book in the footnote on page 59. It's also mentioned in the liner notes for the song "Nowhere Man" on the "As Time Goes By" disc. The fire happened in late 1974 after Joe Osborn and his family moved to Nashville.

Speaking of influences jazz drummer Buddy Rich is mentioned as one of Karen's influences.

In the From The Top album, Richard declares that Caravan was recorded in the living room of his house in 1965 (a home recording) .
Then, he must have recorded I Want To Hold Your Hand.
Every Little Thing is one of eleven songs that were cut in 1966 during their contract with RCA. The others songs are: The Girl from Ipanema, Strangers In The Night, Iced Tea, Flat Baroque ( can somebody help me with the others? ).
About the fire in Joe Osborn garage, yes, the ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES were destroyed, but no the copies of acetate reference discs (vinyl) that were put in other places. I hope this happen with Eleanor Rigby as happened with Nowhere Man and California Dreamin'.

About six months ago on a website called Yesterdayland, which unfortunately is not around anymore, there was a poll on the song Please Mr. Postman. They asked which version is your favorite. And they listed the Beatles, the Carpenters and Marvelettes.
This was the result:
3. Marvelettes with 6 votes
2. The Beatles 11 votes
1. The Carpenters 16 votes

I was surprised to see the Carpenters was the top choice. I really thought it would be the Beatles.

Well, the Carpenters were specialist in "take a bad song and make it better".........(he, he).

I never really cared for the Beatles version of Please Mr. Postman, but I did like the Marvellettes for a while. Ofcourse the Carpenters did best with the song.
I also think the Carpenters version of There's A Kind Of Hush is far better than Hermans Hermits.

I really like the Carpenters rendition of Rainbow Connection. It's hard to believe this beautiful song was first recorded by Kermit the frog.

I read in an old beach boys biography that the carpenters
were the first to record "don't worry baby", but without success so the beach boys recorded it also and was very sucessful with that song. I hope that richard will finally release their version plus, a song named "why don't they understand?" which according to karen they've recorded it for the whole night only to find out that rich decided not to release the song...............and also "make me laugh"

I just know there have to be more unreleased songs than we have been told about. I believe there must be outtakes hanging around from the recording sessions of each of their albums.
"Don't Worry Baby" is a great song, I really liked B.J. Thomas' recording of it in 1977. Karen's voice is perfect for the song.

It would be great if there was a recording of the Carpenters doing "In My Room". It's a beautiful song.

If Karen were to have sang that song it most likely would have that chill factor. I always thought the Carpenters and the Beach Boys could have done a great duet. The Beach Boys did really well with Chicago on Wishing You Were Here.

B.J. Thomas' version is much more polished than the Beach Boys's.

I always thought B.J. Thomas' vocal was very good on "Don't Worry Baby", although B.J.'s vocals were always excellent. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" is one of the greats of all-time, and also a Bacharach composition.
