Author: Chris [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 07:13:40 12/31/02 Tue In reply to: Chris 's message, "Avery's Birth Story!" on 07:12:21 12/31/02 Tue Preface: Lucky me, I had all day morning sickness from the day I found out I was pregnant (5/31/01) till the day I delivered! Yuck! Silly me thought I had the flu but took a HPT just to double check and boy was I shocked! Shocked because I was on the birth control pill. Took me a few days and then I realized that I had taken some antibiotics back in early April and then it all made since. DH was so happy and excited when I told him when he came home from work that day – he called everyone we knew to tell them! Ok skip ahead 7 months to Dec. 27th – I was 2 days shy of being 36 weeks. It was a Thursday and it was my first time having my internal exam. The nurse checked me and said I was dilated to 0 and not effaced at all – Good – because we were planning on going out of town – to the sand dunes in CA – for the holiday weekend. So we left the next day. Saturday the 29th was my 25th birthday and I was exactly 36 weeks pregnant and feeling good. Sunday the 30th – I went on a semi bumpy truck ride to the store and to a competition hill to watch the sand drag races. Then a few hours later I tripped over our dogs leash but didn’t really fall too hard just enough for me to fall to my knees – fast forward to around 10:30pm – I went potty just like any other time – stood up – pulled my pants up and took a few steps and felt a little gush – I thought what the heck? Went and sat back down on the toilet and tried to pee – nothing. Looked in my undies and my maxi pad was kind of pink – uummm – so I went and found my “What To Expect When Your Expecting” book and looked up water breaking and it said amniotic fluid is very light pink and smells sweet - not like ammonia like urine would – so I smelled and sure enough it smelled sweet! Uh Oh! Here we were out in the middle of nowhere in the sand dunes in another state! So I yelled out the door for my DH and he came and I told him and he said I don’t know go talk to Nicole and Donnie. So I changed my pad and went to find my best friend and her husband’s cousin’s wife to talk with them because they both had babies already. Neither one of them seemed concerned – they both just thought it was a weak bladder!! But every time I moved in a certain way another little gush would come and so this went on for about a half hour and I told DH I really think its my water breaking and we contemplated staying the night and leaving in the morning or leaving then and we decided on leaving then so we packed up and left. I used up all my maxi pads at this point so I had to put a blanket and a towel under me. At some point along the drive I leaked out of my undies and pants so I had to sit on the towel naked from below the waist!! We found a gas station and I told DH to go in and buy some maxi pads but he came out and said they didn’t have any – so I told him well if you don’t want amniotic fluid in the seat of our brand new truck you better find something – so he came back out with a pack of DIAPERS! So I sat the whole rest of the way home on diapers and replacing them as the filled up!!! It was quite a scene! I didn’t start having contractions until around Midnight. I wasn’t sure If I was having them – I just felt these little crampy feelings so I started timing them and sure enough first they came every 12 minutes and then every ten and so on. We got home around 4am – took showers - packed my hospital bag (which I was planning on packing when we got home from our trip!) blow dried my hair and called my mom. Headed to the hospital – got there around 5:30am – contractions were 5 minutes apart but not too bad yet – like strong period cramps – checked in and they put me in triage. The nurse hooked my up and checked me and said, “Yep your water broke alright and you’re dilated to about almost a 2!” I think that was when DH finally believed that my water had broke! So they admitted me – moved me to my labor and delivery room. Then they had a guy come in to put my IV in and I could have killed him. He attempted – very badly – 3 time to find a vein in the top of my right hand!!! OMG – it hurt so bad I started weeping. Finally the nurse who was taking care of me said Ill do it and she tried in my left hand and couldn’t find a vein either so they had the anestegialigist (sp) come in and he got it first time no problem. Turns out we find out later that the first guy was a student!! And the hospital I’m delivering in is a teaching hospital!!! Oh boy! So the get my fluids going and also give me pitocin since my water had broken so long ago and I was only a 2. So at 10 am I was in some MAJOR pain and started to cry – they checked me and I was only a 3 but they said I could have my epidural if I wanted it so I said Yes! The worst part of that was the COLD iodine they had to put all over my back! Oh relief! I got jipped though and didn’t get the slow drip epi – I got the kind where it wheres off every 2 hours and they have to come in and give me another dose thru the catherder they had tapped to my shoulder! So for 2 hours from 10-12, I felt great – she checked me at 12 and I was a 4. Epi wore off – I cried – another dose of epi medicine – felt great – nurse checked me at 2pm and I was a 10!!!! Holly cow! No one had even called my doctor yet – so the nurse called and the dr said he’d be there in an hour. At 4pm! My Dr shows up and says I’m not pushing effectively with the epi so to wait for it to where off! What! No way! Here comes the real pain! So I start pushing at around 4:30-5pm – Oh my God the pain! I was begging for pain relief – I was begging for a C-section – I was begging for death – I puked – I screamed – I yelled at my mom – I made my DH cry – It was bad! The worst part was I never had the urge to push! All I felt was the worst pain of my life! It felt like someone was stabbing me in my lower stomach with a machete! I had bladder surgery when I was 2 and have a huge scar along my bikini area and my opinion was there may have been some scar tissue built up or something that was ripping – I don’t know – but it hurt so so bad and then to not feel like pushing – that didn’t help so finally I just pushed whether I was having a contraction or not! Then I could here DH saying, “He’s crowning babe, he’s crowing!” (we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl) and then “The heads out!” and I yelled “Get the body out!!!” The Dr said reach down, so I reached down and pulled my baby onto my chest!!! The greatest moment of my life. And I cried and rubbed her! And she was the most beautiful little thing I have ever seen! Avery Nicole DeRouchey was born 4 weeks early on 12/31/01 at 6:22 pm weighing 6 lbs 9 oz, 19 inches long! They cleaned her up and everyone took turns holding her and then I nursed her for the first time and she latched right on! That night (New Years Eve) DH slept on the couch/chair next to my bed and I snuggled with Avery as we rang in the New Year – the best New Years of my life!!!
