CHAPTER THREE

Dusk was falling by the time Peter returned home. As he parked his truck in the driveway, Peter couldn't help feeling he'd been away for two years instead of only two weeks. Quickly, he grabbed the stack of mail and packages from the front steps and made his way inside. Hastily, he flicked a light on in the living room, then Peter headed down the hallway toward his bedroom. There, he found Sophie fast asleep, curled in his bed. She was wearing his light blue shirt, the same one she'd worn when she spent the night last year - the night before her trailer's inauspicious arrival on his front lawn.

Peter smiled as he walked over to the window, peering almost fondly at the silver monstrosity parked outside. Would Sophie still want to live there, he wondered?

Now that he and Sophie were together again and engaged to be married, Peter found himself hoping Sophie might want to move in with him, but he knew better than to challenge her independence all the same.

"Somebody steal my trailer?" Sophie teased, propping herself up on one elbow and sweeping a stray lock of hair behind her ears as she awoke.

"No such luck," Peter grinned, letting the curtain fall as he turned to face her.

Good-naturedly, Sophie ignored Peter's quip and threw the covers back, placing her feet on the carpet, gently testing her ankle.

"Hey, hey, where do you think you're going?" Peter worried.

"Roger left my bags in your living room," Sophie gestured toward the door. "I need to go home and unpack."

"Soph, you need your rest," Peter countered, grabbing her arm to balance her as she stood.

"And whose fault is it that I haven't been getting any rest?" Sophie whispered seductively, her eyes sparkling as she recalled their romantic visit to Vashon Island.

"I know…I'm sorry," Peter agreed guiltily.

"Peter…I was kidding. I'm fine." Sophie couldn't believe he would actually take her seriously.

Tenderly, she framed his face in her hands, "I loved every minute of it."

Then, with a wry smile she added, "I just didn't think I'd be climbing a mountain this morning."

"Ben'd shoot me," Pete chuckled, remembering the Sheriff's parting words.

"Don't be silly," Sophie scoffed with a grin. "Charity'd kill you first."

"Which is why you should stay here and get a good night's sleep. Rest that ankle," Peter justified.

"But I need to unpack," Sophie insisted.

"What if you…unpacked here?" Peter asked with a soft hesitancy in his voice, wondering if this was the right time to broach the subject.

"Here?" Sophie repeated just as quietly, slightly unnerved by the question.

"If that would make you happy?" Peter's boyish charm was virtually irresistible.

"Would that make you happy?" Sophie asked with uncharacteristic shyness.

"Oh yeah…very happy," Peter nodded with a grin.

"Well, I suppose there's no sense postponing the inevitable," Sophie sighed fatefully as she twirled her engagement ring around her finger.

"Try not to sound so excited…" Peter winced sarcastically.

"Okaaaay." Sophie tried again, "There's no sense postponing the inevitable…" The now sultry tone in her voice was accompanied by an insistent tug on Peter's hand as she led him toward the bed.

"Soph, you need your rest," Peter reminded hesitantly.

"I need you more," she whispered in his ear.

"Charity's gonna kill me," Peter moaned, as his lips urgently sought hers and they sank eagerly onto the bed.

CHAPTER FOUR

"Mornin'!" Sophie greeted cheerfully, sneaking up behind Peter as he drank his morning coffee by the kitchen counter and flipped through two weeks worth of junk mail.

"Any coffee left?" she asked, tightening her grip around his waist and placing a few light kisses on his bare back.

"Uh-huh," Peter answered, adding mischievously, "I remembered to leave some, unlike other people I know."

Peter's pointed barb at Sophie's penchant to drink an entire pot of fresh coffee did not go unnoticed.

"Once! Once, I didn't leave you any…" she poked him playfully in the ribs.

"How's the ankle?" Peter worried, noticing her limping slightly.

"Good as new." Sophie tried to make light of her accident by twirling her ankle but the ankle just wouldn't cooperate. "Well, almost," she covered quickly.

"Anything interesting in the mail?" she asked blithely, grabbing a mug from one of the cabinets.

"Bills, bills, junk and …Soph, what is that thing?" Peter pointed to a large box partly opened.

Sophie peeked inside and gulped. "Looks like a fondue set," she answered innocently, seeing no need to explain to Peter about her despondent evening with the Home Shopping Network.

"Where'd it come from?" Peter asked, attempting to look at the label and getting his hand slapped by Sophie in the process.

"Uh…the WALPOCS must have sent it…as an engagement present," she fibbed, closing the box tightly and placing it under the counter.

"We'll have to invite them to the wedding," Sophie suggested breezily.

"And when would that be, exactly?" Peter asked, nibbling temptingly on her neck.

"How about May 20th?" Sophie asked, catching Peter off-guard with her quick response.

"Well, sure…why May 20th?" Peter wondered aloud.

Sophie turned to face him, explaining with almost a wistful look, "I was reading the album that Charity put together for us..."

"Sully and Michaela's letters?" Peter urged her to continue.

Sophie nodded and replied hesitantly, "She also put some newspaper clippings in there, too - articles, announcements…"

"Wedding announcements?" Peter was beginning to see where this was heading.

"Maybe…" Sophie smiled, waiting to see Peter's reaction to her idea.

"You want us to get married on Michaela and Sully's anniversary?" Peter grinned as he contemplated the idea.

"Yes?" Sophie's eyes begged for his agreement.

"Yes." Peter nodded indulgently as Sophie wrapped her arms happily around him.

Suddenly, Peter's eyes twinkled with memories of their supernatural experiences in Colorado Springs. Finding himself unable to resist the notion, he whispered softly in Sophie's ear, "Think they'll come?"

"Soph, I want you to take the day off today…unpack, rest. If there's anything heavy you want me to move from the trailer, I'll do it tonight," Peter promised as he grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.

"I travel light, remember," Sophie said wryly, thinking of how few material possessions she actually had.

"Peter, I really don't need the whole day off," she added, anxious to get back to work.

"Please, Soph, take it easy, just one day, for me…" Peter begged.

"I guess I could email Charity, tell her we've set the date?" Sophie smiled.

"Good idea…relax, get settled, send some emails…" Peter was pleased to see Sophie warming to his suggestions.

Then, maybe I'll cook you dinner?" Sophie offered temptingly.

"Great, as long as you don't overdo," Peter scolded.

"Worry wart," Sophie pouted.

Wounded to the quick, Peter countered indignantly, "Concerned, loving, fiance."

Then, with a kiss goodbye, Peter shut the door quickly before Sophie could say another word.

CHAPTER FIVE

"Goooood morning!" Peter greeted the Cliffhangers sprightly, feeling exceptionally happy after his first night home with Sophie.

"Dear Lord, he's cheery," Daisy groaned bleakly.

"I hate cheery," David sneered in agreement.

Ignoring their barbs, Peter sat cross-legged on a table and began his first group encounter session of the new semester.

"Writing. Letters, diaries, poetry," he announced. "What can it teach us about ourselves?" Peter asked pointedly.

Unfortunately, the Cliffhangers' attentions were focused elsewhere.

"Nice day outside," Shelby muttered, tempted by the blazing sun.

"Peter's always up for a hike on a nice day. What's this all about?" Scott wondered, loathing classroom time.

"The art of the written word. The art of poetry." Daisy offered profoundly.

"The art of…love," Ezra swooned, enraptured by Daisy, as usual.

"So he did get lucky," Auggie joked until Juliette poked him in the shoulder, but by now, the Cliffhangers were all laughing under their breaths.

"I'm glad you find this topic so amusing," Peter snapped. "Then you won't mind making this your group project this semester."

Moans resonated throughout the room as Peter continued. "I want you to keep a diary, write a letter or a poem - anything - but write it as if it won't be read by anyone for the next hundred years. What would you want the person finding it to know about you? About your lives here?"

"That we spent all our time doin' stupid stuff like this?" David suggested.

"If that's what you want to write about - fine," Peter agreed, throwing David off his guard. "Just submit it for your May exams," he explained

"May…a month without snow - sometimes," Shelby wisecracked.

"I'll be able to work on my tan," Juliette mused.

"I'll be graduating," Ezra sighed, not really sure he was ready to leave.

Peter smiled and cupped his chin in his hands, resting his elbows on his knees as he listened. He'd only been gone two weeks but he hadn't realized how much he missed them all, until now. Sure, he'd had other great groups at Horizon before - terrific kids like Spencer Carrier and even that impossible Raymond the Runner - but there was something about these Cliffhangers. Each one of them held a special place in his heart.

So, filled with that warm thought, Peter mischievously decided to join in their wistful daydreams by adding softly, "And I'll be married…"

"Why do we graduate in May anyway?" Ezra continued his self-centered lament, oblivious to Peter's announcement.

"What did you say?" Daisy's mouth dropped open.

"I said, why do we graduate…" Ezra repeated.

"Not you!" Daisy shushed him, waving her hand in his face.

"You!" she said, pointing to Peter, who sat in quiet innocence.

"Who me?" Peter's eyes twinkled.

"Yesss," Daisy waited expectantly.

"You mean the part about the writing assignment or the part about my getting married?" Peter asked in mock confusion.

"Oh my gosh! You're getting married!" Juliette screamed - the mere mention of a wedding sending her into her customary frenzy of excitement.

"Who to?" David droned snidely.

"Happy for you, Man," Scott offered his congratulations.

"For you…and Sophie," Shelby smiled subtly.

"See, I told ya he got lucky," Auggie laughed as he slapped Peter good-naturedly on the arm.

Peter beamed as he thought of just how lucky he truly was to be marrying the incredible Sophie Becker. With good-natured ease, Peter replied thankfully, "I sure did, Aug, I sure did."
