From CCCook:

"Mom...Winnie..." Paul tried to cut through the argument using his normal voice. Yeah, right.

Terry snickered as the two women continued to beat each other over the head with their dissatisfaction about being neighbours. They had been arguing nonstop for at least forty-five minutes since they figured out they'd be moving next door to each other. Chantal, who was still in her nightgown and slippers, escaped long enough to get dressed and ready to go. Somewhere. Anywhere.

She hated to hear her grandmothers fighting like that...even though she knew they always did, it was never very pleasant. Jerry refused to get involved at all. He quietly withdrew from the living room, gathered up his camera bag, and signalled a very relieved Chantal to come with him.

Paul nodded his blessing as they left through the back door. He would have preferred to go with them, but it really wouldn't be fair to Terry. Then again, Terry obviously found it entertaining, if his smirking, snickering, and giggled snide comments under his breath was any indication. Poor Gavroche and Eponine had run and hid under Paul's bed as soon as Anne and Winnie had started to raise their voices. Damn smart cats! Paul started to speak again, but was stopped by yet another tirade.

"They're not going to hear you, Paul...you might as well let it play out." Terry offered. "If your mum's anything like mine, they'll be at it at least till the end of the day. Probably till we've already lived there for a month. Or more."

Paul smiled crookedly. His thoughts exactly. "Yeah. They're really quite a lot alike, but they'd never admit it."

"At least you'll be getting your house back!" Terry stage whispered. "I'll still have Mum to deal with...but I can handle her."

Paul looked at him skeptically, which annoyed Terry just a little.
"I can!" Terry replied, almost too loudly. "Sometimes it just takes a little time!"

******************

"No, we signed our contract first! That means you need to get out of your contract and find someplace else to live! What on Earth were you thinking?!" Anne snipped.

"I was thinking we could find a house in a nice neighbourhood, and not have to deal with your sort!" Winnie retorted.

Paul and Terry looked at their mothers, then at each other. "I'm going out for a smoke!" Terry suddenly said. "So am I!" Paul, the confirmed nonsmoker quickly added. They went outside, jumped in Paul's car and drove off.

******************

After a while, Winnie and Anne stopped talking. The house was very quiet. Too quiet. "Paul?" Anne ventured. Nothing. Chantal and Jerry seemed to be gone as well.
"Terry, love, where are you?" Winnie called. Then it dawned on them. They vaguely remembered everybody leaving. Hours ago, by now. Anne looked out the window. Both cars were gone. "Now, see what you've done, Winifred. They've all gone and left you!"

"I believe it's you they left, Anne!" Winnie sniffed.

Gavroche and Eponine stole a look from their hiding place. "You're both right!" would have been understood if either lady was able to speak kittenish, unfortunately, they couldn't, so Gavroche and Eponine simply went back to sleep, leaving the humans to their own devices.
