From CCCook:

The Cravens had gotten up fairly late this Saturday morning, and were just doing a few things around the house before inspecting the ranch. Now that it was afternoon, Phil and Lily sat at the kitchen table, where they had cappuccino and assorted donuts when Kieran decided to join them. He was bored, so he decided to ask his aunt and uncle some questions.

"How did you guys end up in Spuds...Studs, anyway? I know this is your home town, Auntie Lilybelle, but damn...why'd you come back?!"

"Would you rather we move our ranch out to Los Angeles? Where do you think we'd put it...in the middle of Disneyland?" Phil replied in a sarcastically amused tone.

"I think Australia already has enough kangaroos...but people in Studs have never seen anything like it!" Lily joined in a similar vein.

"Your aunt Lily spent ten years away from her home and family to be with me...I think it was about time I did the same for her!"

"First of all, dear...wherever you are is home and family to me. Don't you forget it!" Lily responded, almost indignantly, as if Phil didn't feel exactly the same way. "And Kieran, don't let him bullshit you..."

"Lily!" Phil feigned horror at his wife's language. "And after you just lectured me and Kieran about crude...'locker-room' humour?"

Lily smiled as she recalled Phil and Kieran's conversation of a few days ago that she walked in on when they were watching and commenting on some "manly" video.
"That's not the same thing! But Phil's right, Kieran, I shouldn't use that language...but still, don't let him bull..poop you...he wanted to come to America very badly!!!"

"You oughta be glad I did, Kieran!" Phil said.

"I guess I am...now." Kieran admitted. "But I'm more curious about how you two got together in the first place. You're always talking about how it was love at first sight and all that. So, what happened?"

Phil and Lily looked at each other. "Ooh! He wants us to tell the story of how we met!" Lily fairly squealed as her eyes lit up.

Phil smiled. "I don't think you're ready for this, Kieran."

Kieran rolled his eyes. "Well fine, if you don't want to tell me..."

Lily punched Phil in the arm. "Ow!" He cried, rubbing his arm where she punched it. "Well, evidently your aunt Lily wants us to tell the story...fine, then. You did ask for it, Kieran!" he reminded.

"Well...it all happened about ten years ago..." Lily began.

****************

Lily had packed up all her Studly belongings and moved to Australia. It was something she'd always wanted to do, but beyond that, she really hadn't a clue. She literally eeny-meeny-miney-mo'd herself to Melbourne where she found a tiny rental place and a job waiting tables, tending bar, washing dishes, and pretty much anything else that needed to be done at a small, local hangout. As it happened, Phil was an occasional patron.

One evening, things were not going well for Lily. The boss, who was boorish and rude at best, was pressuring her to do the work of four. Too many of the staff had unexpectedly taken the night off, and since Lily had no seniority, it was up to her.

On top of that, the male patrons were harrassing her, alternately leering at the slightly tight fit of her uniform, and ridiculing her soft Texas drawl. The boss was, naturally, nowhere to be seen. Too busy looking the other way.

Finally, one of the men lewdly slapped her on the bottom. Lily hauled off and slapped him back. In the face. Hard. The man was shocked. He let out several obscenities and raised his hand to her. In a flash, the tall, blue-eyed gentleman who'd been watching in disgust from a table in the corner got between them and threatened to castrate him on the spot. This started a huge brawl, resulting in several contusions, a couple of broken ribs, more than one concussion...when Phil finally freed himself from the melee, he was relatively unscathed, Lily was already gone.

After getting Lily's name and address from her boss, Phil drove over to Lily's flat. He knocked on the door.

No response.

"Lily?!" he called. "Lily Cook, are you in there?"

He tried the door. It was ajar, so he walked in. "Lily?"

Finally hearing the intruder, Lily came out of her bedroom and screamed. She'd just come out of the shower and was clad only in her rather threadbare baby blue terrycloth robe. "Who are you? What are you doing in my apartment?! OH MY GOD, YOU WERE AT THE RESTAURANT!!!"

"Well yes I was love, but you don't understand!"

But Lily was beyond hearing. She ran back to her room and started throwing things. Phil ducked as a pair of high heels narrowly missed his head. He wasn't so lucky when the bright yellow bud vase came flying from behind the bedroom door, buds and all. Lily heard a loud thud, then silence. She wrapped her robe more tightly around herself as she took a closer look at the intruder who now lay senseless on the floor, and squeaked with recognition.

"Oh. My. God! IT'S HIM!!! That's the guy who saved my life!!! I'VE KILLED HIM!!!!!"

Phil opened his eyes and saw the two most beautiful brunettes he'd ever seen looking down at him.

"Oh my God! Are you all right?!" They spoke frantically in perfect unison. "I'm so sorry!!! It's just that you can't be too careful!"

"What?" Phil managed, not quite remembering how he got on the floor. The girls were trying to help him sit up as they continued to fuss over him.

"I thought you were trying to hurt me...or rob me...not that there's anything much to steal here...oh, I feel so bad about this! Do you know where you are? I hope you still know your name, cause I don't...oh I feel so horrible! After what you did for me, now you're gonna hate me, and we've only just met! Oh, you poor thing, you don't understand a word I'm saying, I can see it in your eyes!"

"What?" He repeated. His head was starting to really hurt a lot, and hadn't stopped spinning. The ladies looked alarmed. Panicked, really. Phil had turned quite pale, and seemed to be fighting nausea. He closed his eyes briefly. When he opened them again, there was only one girl.

Lily.

LILY! That's right! He was there to see that Lily Cook was all right after that horrible business...

"Oh my God...I can't believe this! I can't tell you how sorry I am, and oh, that was so sweet of you to help me out back there, and..."

"Phil."

"No, sweetie, I'm Lily. Oh my God, he's worse than I thought! Gimme your car keys, we're going to the hospital now!"

"No...I'm Phil. That's my name. You were hoping I still knew it...well, I do! I'm Phil Craven."

"I'm Lily Cook!"

"Yes, I know...nice to meet you...but now...I don't feel so well..."

Lily never much cared for that bit of carpet anyway.

******************

"No way! You didn't!!!" Kieran exclaimed, then imitating his aunt's lilting tones, "Philip, that's disgusting!"

"He did!" Lily laughed. "And he felt so bad about it! He must have apologized to me a zillion times...even though it was my fault for giving him a concussion!"

"Which was my fault for breaking and entering in the first place!" Phil added.

"Well, I shouldn't have been so hasty...I mean, I didn't know who you were!"

"Which is precisely why you couldn't take any chances!"

"But then I wouldn't have almost cracked open your skull!"

"It wasn't a bad concussion...as far as concussions go..."

"You were unconscious!"

"Only for a minute!"

"You were seeing double! You threw up all over my nice clean carpet!"

"I told you I was sorry! Besides, you hated that carpet!"

By this time, Phil and Lily were both laughing hysterically...and had started tickling each other playfully. The kissing would begin shortly, and Kieran wanted no part of it. He cleared his throat loudly.

"All right, chill! I knew I shouldn't have asked how you met if I didn't want to see...THAT! Ewwwwww!!!!! *I'm* gonna throw up now!!!"

"I guess you don't want to hear about our wedding, then!" Lily grinned as Phil kissed her cheek.

Kieran made a rude noise and ran into his room, leaving Phil and Lily alone...which suited them just fine.
