I believe that Buddy Holly demonstrated, on that last full studio session, that he was well over the middle of the road and moving into a full on application to join the Frank Sinatra set. He may even have become a "bobby", as it was well known that having hits was more important to him than stylistic pigeonholing. Had events turned out differently, I suspect that I, and perhaps many other fans of that time, would have lost interest in his output and perhaps his "legend status" would not have occurred. I hated "Moondreams", and was seriously taken aback by it. I also disliked intensely "True Love Ways"."Raining In My Heart" also failed to tickle my musical pallette.
Lots of pop acts started their careers brightly, and then faded into dreary mediocrity in the years following. In fact, this is more the norm than the exception.
Who knows.
