I've seen that prediction so many times. And yet on his last tour, he was playing rock 'n roll with Tommy Allsup, Waylon Jennings and Carl Bunch. He didn't book himself into Vegas in a tuxedo to do a Bobby Darin thing with a brassy jazz combo. He opened every Winter Tour performance with "Gotta Travel On" strummed on his amplified Fender... not "That's Amore" crooned into a hand mic.

And his plan (after the tour) was to return to Texas and build a studio, and explore blending C&W, R&B with R&R. Do you really think he was planning on bringing Dick Jacobs and his NYC session orchestra to Lubbock for more string sessions?

Folks often point to the Red Robinson interview as "proof" that Buddy was abandoning his roots. But if you listen carefully to Robinson's question, he asks Buddy if he would QUIT THE MUSIC BUSINESS if trends change. Since quitting music was not an option for Buddy, he quickly replied he would hop on the trend.

Holly had plans for his Lubbock studio that included Gospel, steel guitars and all the talented local West Texas performers he'd met. He definitely would have changed his sound as the years progressed. But I really think the Dick Jacobs sessions that so many here are offended by were really just one in a series of experiments he wanted to explore.

In the Modern Jazz world, there was a time when everyone tried recording with strings. It was considered a fun experiment. Even the hard Bop players, like Charlie Parker, released a record "Charlie Parker With Strings" but I doubt this is proof that if Parker had lived, he would have become Lawrence Welk.

Can we please give Holly some credit here?
