This is a practice which makes use of the master model concept. The advantage is that you do not need to carry the drafting information around in the same part file as the assembly or model that this drawing is referencing; therefore enabling multiple users to work together on detailing or modeling or assembly creation tasks (collaboration). It also promotes smaller drawing file sizes and faster performance. Many companies use this as a standard practice.
