I am very sorry to hear of how ill your father has been!! I definitely know about the emotional AND physical side effects of the prednisone. I also know about valley fever...my dad contracted that on a business trip to Pheonix last year (we live in FL, so no one really knew about it here). He was also put on high dose steroids for about a month to ease the symptoms. For Valley Fever, though, he also needed high doses of antibiotics.

Unfortunately for many of us on this site, steroids are a necessary evil...we have to deal with the side effects to live, which usually means taking OTHER meds to couter act the prednisone side effects. Serequil, although it is an anti-psychotic, IS being used as a sleep medication and MAY help with the mental side effects your Dad is experiencing. The drop in medication could help that as well. It may take a few days to notice a difference...also, he may experience other side effects from the drop in dosage, so have him drink AT LEAST 8 glasses of fluids a day (the non-alchoholic/non-caffinated kind) to ease the muscle pain he may have. Also, have your dad do some light stretches as much as he can to keep himself from getting any muscle atrophy/pain. If he gets ANY worse...TAKE HIM TO THE ER!!! Let the docs there check him out to make sure there is not another option for him. DO NOT STOP THE MEDICATION ON YOUR OWN!!!!

I am sorry if some of the posts/information on this site scared you...prednisone can be a scary drug, but it can also be a life saving one. My frustrations with prednisone do cause me to become agitated, but NOT violent...I have heard of 'roid rage...but I have never personally experienced it to that degree. I hope your father does not either!!

Please let me know if you have any other questions or just want to talk this out!!

Ivy
