Subject: Steroid Induced Maniac Episode

Hi. My name is Sara. I’m 33 years old and I have Bipolar Disorder. I am in desperate need of advice.

Recently, I had bronchitis. I went to my regular doctor, who knows I suffer from manic-depression. He is also well aware of the medications I take. And, most importantly, he knows that I CANNOT take any form of medication with steroids. This is written throughout my medical charts.

Long story short, I was given a shot, which evidently had steroids. Five hours later, I was having a full manic episode. Fortunately, I had called my Mom earlier. She was worried and was at my home. She immediately called my Psychiatrist and Psychologist. I was taken to my Psychiatrist’s office and I was put on a heavy sedation drug.

It’s been two weeks since the shot. The steroids should be out of my system; however, I am still in a hypo manic state … and I am beginning to feel like I am sliding down into a depressive state … or mixed state. The “sedation” medication is NOT working. I am under my Psychiatrist and Psychologist’s care. I have not been able to work. I cannot focus. I still have light hallucinations. I cannot sleep. My thoughts are racing … etc.

I suppose my question is legal … do I have a medical malpractice case? Obviously, I cannot handle such an ordeal; I must work on getting better. BUT, where do I stand?

I would appreciate any information and/or help

S.
