:there is no mention EVER of a female devil

Um, sorry to piss on your chips and all, but there was. She was called Lilith. According to jewish folklore (in many ways, a more reliable source than fundamental Christian theology as it predates the Judao-Christian bond), she was Adam's first wife. She was created, just as Adam was, from the dust of the earth, as his equal. But when Adam tried to fuck her without her consent, she refused to be treated as an inferior and flew off (literally). Subsequently, God sent three angels off to go look for her, and threatened that if she didn't come back, a hundred of her sons would die every day. She refused and remained in exile in the wilderness, wreaking her vengeance by strangling or sucking blood from newborn babies. She was described as having long hair and beautiful, but she had claws, wings and a snake's tail. At night, she went round visiting men sleeping alone, making them have wet dreams (significant because it was supposed to symbolise the loss of their virility).
Anyway, after this debarcle, God made Adam a second wife using a method that emphasised inferiority. She knew her place until she was led astray by the serpent (which traditional jewish mysticism suggest was Lilith in disguise).
My point is that this tale implies that being a disobedient or sexually assertive wife is against the will of God. In this respect, women are associated with sin and wrong-doing, sexul tempation etc. whereas God and man are linked together as makers and upholders of the law.

In repsonse to this, feminist writers have produced oppositional readings of the myth, whereby Lilith becomes a feminist heroine (re. Juith Plaskow, Alix Pirani and other such wasters). At the same time, these very same creatures adamantly state that men wrote such folklore, but if they did, then why would Lilith be a feminist heroine?? The power of paradox.

As a by-point, Tim is correct to refer to Nietzsche. Despite the fact that he referred to himself as a posthumous thinker, he would comment that in today's postmodern era, it's women's fault for not perpetuating their own will to power to arise above men. And why dont/cant women perpetuate the will to power? Because they are the weaker sex. Intellect over strength, and all the rest of it.
