Subject: The Glass Turret

This is a poem I started some time ago but have never been able to get 'right' and I now think I am losing it. However, I am fond of it so don't want to just send it to recycle bin unless it is beyond repair and would be grateful of any constructive help anyone can offer.

The Glass Turret (3)

Sitting contentedly in her glass turret
exposed to the world, yet protected
silken-threaded needle darts in and out
weaving all the rich colours of her life,
from the greens of the enchanted forest,
the cool blues of the sky, the pale white
of the beautiful lilies which grow nearby.
From time to time she stops her task
looks up from her work to contemplate
shakes her head then starts again
faster and faster flies the thread
the need to finish and escape so urgent.

The midday sun beats down relentlessly
the lush forest provides little shade
sighing she wipes her glistening brow.
Startled by the glare from the light
reflecting and refracting off the scratches
from the glass, where life’s knocks lay
she puts down her needlework
and looks out of the prison of her mind.
She smiles serenely her secret smile
spying the silver unicorn in the forest glade
bowing gracefully to drink in gay abandon
from the effervescent pool of life.

Oppressive heat distorting views of life
The entire glass turret becomes a prism
displaying the entire spectrum of light
so gay and bright it mocks her anxiety.
Clutching her tightening heart she prowls
with clenched fists beating walls so round
the glass reverberates hollowly the sound
Her soul, neither in nor out, cries out
no escape from this imprisoned eternity.
She glance at her tapestry of forest life
the unicorn prancing through the glade
half complete, but half yet to finish.

Another prism splinters her fragile mind
lunging forward she pulls at her work
clawing frantically at delicate needlepoint
tugging it until it is nearly all undone
threads of her life barely hanging there.
All composure on journey of no return
smooth locks around her tumble down
calm exterior giving way reveals her soul
through eyes so blue in delicate landscape
white dress shadows of grey reveals
as she twirls around dancing her pirouette
before collapsing to the ground.

The unicorn looks up startled by the vision
eyes wide, nostrils flared, ears laid back
for one brief second their eyes meet
an understanding agreed between the pair
but she hesitated just one second too long
as the unicorn retreats her mind explodes.
Glass splinters everywhere within her soul
as her thoughts disintegrate lose their hold
whirling round and round like a tornado
the scattered threads of her devastated mind
she beats and bangs on shattered walls
for all to see but none to understand.

The glass turret can no more pain take
it shatters completely a decaying heap.
That night the silver unicorn returned
but realised he was far too late
for there in the enchanted forest glade
lay the remains of the ethereal turret.
Sharp spikes still caught the light
this time though it was pale moonlight
reflecting gently her rainbow pyre.
Looking for his princess spied her there
laying peacefully upon the top
pinned down by a huge shaft of glass
straight through her human heart.

A tear rolled slowly down his cheek
for so many dreams of theirs unlived.
