actually, you do have to keep your mouth closed the whole way. you actually don't have to see where exactly you're pointing the tip. what i do is first open my mouth, then point the tip to a particular tooth, then close mouth, then turn on waterpik. i can actually use out of the bathroom and around the house without spilling a drop.

spend about a 3-5 sec per tooth and turn it off and spit obviously when you're close to being full.
