Subject: How exactly do you use a water pik?

Recently at my last ortho appointment, the gum area between my two front teeth bled when one of the teeth was touched too hard. So my ortho decided to delay the wire adjustment and told me to get a water pik to improve gum health. I bought one recently, but can't really figure out how to use it without spraying water all over the place.

I figure you're supposed to aim between teeth and not directly at the gums. But for five seconds each? That seems like a long time and my water reservoir is really small. Also, whenever I use it, the water gets sprayed all over.

So...how exactly do you use a water pik?
