I thought it was almost always the ortho who placed the brackets.

My ortho assistant only prepared my teeth with the etchant material, cured it, and helped fit the bands. My ortho checked the bands, placed the brackets (the assistant cured them), and even placed the bumpers on the back of my teeth (a seemingly simple procedure).

My assistant has been there forever. I think she is one of the better ones there and I know she was there when I had braces the first time.

I guess the ortho assistants have less privileges at my ortho's.

I found it rather surprising that the assistant placed the brackets because they need to be pretty precise. They can always be adjusted, but they takes more chair time and such.

I have found it interesting when reading these forums and such how the privileges of ortho assistants differ from office to office.

I'd have much fun placing the brackets on peoples' teeth. Some ortho needs to hire me! As long as I don't have to wear scrubs, I think I could get over the whole stigma. Especially if they gave me a special title. :>
