Admittedly I'm not the expert, but after wearing braces for three years in junior high school, I'm in them again in my late thirties to correct severe TMJ pain. My ortho and my dentist (in two different offices in two different towns) say its because my teeth were pulled and the resulting bite was too small and too far back in my mouth. So we're pushing everything out and I'm getting implants to replace the teeth extracted when I was a kid.

Now that you're an adult, the ortho probably has a better idea of what will work for you. I'd be thankful to avoid extractions.
