My experience was similar in that the assistant spent more time talking to me about the options with braces. The ortho came in to check my teeth and gave me his opinion on how long it would take for treatment and what problems I had. He also asked me what my goal was for the treatment. If you don't feel that the orthodontist was helpful or friendly enough, you can always check out other orthos around the area. Should be free.
