I'm 19 and have metal braces. I had intereceptive treatment at age 10(when I had 8 adult teeth), and got the Braces off when I was 13, and wore Essix(clear) retainers from when I was 13 until I decided to do the second round of braces. I didn't have all my teeth in until I was 15, then I had mono for a year, then we moved, then my dad lost his job so my second round of braces just fell through the cracks. Now at age 19, I decided to get the braces over with while I'm in college and other people have them than wait until graduate school or the job world. I always feel like commending the adults on this site for getting braces.

I had to get metal braces because my ortho didn't think I was a canditate for invisalign or ceramic brackets(though he never explained why. Though I was a bit hesident I just decided to go for the metal braces. It's not like I could of afforded ceramics either, they were 1000$ more than metal. I was nervous about metal braces too, while I don't work in a professional job environment, I act/model, so braces could make it harder for me to get parts/photoshoots. As far as modeling, I still get teen magazine opportunities and non-smiling opportunities. And as far as acting, I haven't really noticed any loss of oportunities because I wear braces, although I do have to work harder on my speech and diction than I used to.

I will admit I do feel self-consious about wearing braces. I even felt self consious about them when I was 10. When I was younger with braces(the first time, ages 10-13), it was actually a lot harder for me because of halloween, being the only kid wearing braces at that age, kids always making fun of my braces, even sometimes punching me in the mouth! As an adult, the worst anyone's ever done is stare at them when I talk. It's actually easier as an adult because you don't have to worry about being shoved in a locker and people are more mature about it. Also, since I'm in college, a lot of other students there have braces themselves.
