Hi there!

I turned 18 last month, and I'm starting my sixth month in metal braces. I was told I need 12 month of treatment.
Anyway, about the metal braces: they didn't even offer me a choice! My dentist told me I could get ceramics (he had them too at that time, and he had the same ortho I have, since I felt really really bad when I heard I would have to wear braces if I ever wanted straight teeth.
But when I went to the ortho she was very clear about it: she wouldn't use ceramics. She said they take longer treatment time and they could damage teeth. She did however offer me another choice: I would have to wear metal brackets, but I could choose wheter I wanted my lower teeth done or not. I figured, since I had to wear braces anyway, I would do the lower too.

In the end I'm happy I've gone with metal. They aren't as noticeable as I thought they would be, and I was used to my new look very fast.
A lot of people don't even notice them. I had a few people I see very often, suddenly ask me when I had gotten braces, when I was 4 months in!

Anyway, what I want to say, is that it's really not that bad :-)

Good luck!
pickle
