If your doctor gave you the appliance, I am sure you need it. From what I understand, tongue thrusting can cause misalignment of the teeth, and it sounds like you're saying that's the reason for your issues.

If your doctor thought you could practice on your own, I am sure he would have given you instructions. I'm not saying that he's questioning your ability; however, you have to remember that you're probably doing it subconsciously and at night. You can't exactly practice while you're sleeping, but the appliance CAN continue to work while you sleep. Even if you do not wake up when your tongue thrusts, your body realizes that it's painful and will stop doing it.

I understand what you are going through. I have a Nance appliance, which is an appliance that pretty much removes the roof of my mouth and levels it off at the gum line. The amount of space for my tongue has deminished significantly--but obviously, it must be important for my case, and I'll do anything for a great smile. I had trouble talking, of course, but you know what? I got used to it. My speech has improved, and it continues to improve. I barely notice any slurs anymore, and I'm extremely self-conscious and literally become irritated as hell when I do slur. You should do the same. When you slur, repeat what you slurred. Eventually, you will relearn how to speak.

Remember that it's only temporary, and it's your first step to a great smile and that improvement of your appearance, and also a great burden lifted from your self-esteem.

Many people on these forums have had to go through worse. Such as Dea, who chose an orthodontic treatment that involved her rather intense surgery (AOO). If I remember correctly, that's pretty much having your gums detached and your jaw SHAVED with electrical instruments and then you have stiches hanging out of your mouth. And then, she had the pain from the surgery and pain from the braces.

The list goes on. It's definitely not a fun process and I'm sure everyone wishes they didn't have to go through it to get that great smile they wanted without loss of tooth structure (veneers), but it is worth it. I am certain that you will be satisified with your results (and if you're not, raise all sorts of hell with your orthodontist). We all understand your frustration, so do not be discouraged.
