Hi Lauren,

I feel your pain. I also suffer from cold sores, though luckily I haven't had any since I got my braces on 6 weeks ago (keeping my fingers crossed, but of course it's inevitable). It sounds like you get them a lot. I'm really sorry. I know how painful they can be.

Katy had some really good suggestions (Valtrex & that Colgate stuff). I used to take something called Famvir, which is also a genital herpes medication that they prescribe for oral canker sores and it works pretty well. After I started taking it, I got cold sores less frequently. It's expensive, though, and you need a prescription.

I bought some of that Colgate stuff Katy is talking about, but haven't tried it for a cold sore yet. It also comes highly recommended. I've found that Abreva shortens the length of time I have to suffer with a cold sore, and sometimes tea tree oil helps (and it's cheap). Vitamin E also helps sometimes, though Abreva works better than both of these.

Also, have you tried cutting out nuts, caffeine, and citrus (too acidic) as well as chocolate (I refuse to cut them out completely, but I stop eating them immediately if I feel a cold sore coming on)? Like chocolate, these foods are notorious for encouraging cold sores. Then, of course there's stress, lack of sleep and going without food for long periods of time (which I know we all do when our braces are causing us pain), but it sounds like you've already tried all the obvious stuff.

Good luck, Lauren! If you find a solution, please post again and let us know.
