Subject: My opinion on Summer Fillms I've seen including 40 Year-Old Virgin
In reply to: The Rhino 's message, "Very quick reviews of some films I have seen in the past few months" on 10:11:08 08/19/05 Fri

I'm going in the order that I've seen these films since June 1:

Cinderella Man: I liked it. I cannot believe that one of the complaints of this film was that it was made specifically to try and win Oscars. No heart, all choreographed. Crowe is fantastic as usual and Giamatti more than holds his own.

Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl: The 3-D stuff made my eyes hurt. George Lopez was surprisingly charming. The cuteness factor was that Rodriguez's children supposedly helped him create this film, everything from the story to the effects. It showed.

Batman Begins: Loved it. Absolutely awesome. Bale owned Batman and did a good job as the playboy Bruce Wayne. Katie Holmes sucks though.

War of the Worlds: I liked it. I agree with Rhino, more just a spectacular effects show than a movie with a plot. The scene where the mob steals their van was intense. Tim Robbins is useless. It seemed like they said, hey we need another name actor in here and just plugged him in. Of course, the ending seemed to be pulled out of someone's ass, but I would recommend this film.

Fantastic Four: If you follow the FF comics, you hated this. If didn't, you might actually like it. I never read the FF, but was aware of them. It looked a little cheap and Alba cannot act, but for the most part it was decent. Not enough action for a comic book movie. You think they would have learned their lesson with The Hulk, which I have yet to finish.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory: Depp's Wonka was too weird. Wilder's Wonka was weird, but for a reason: he was testing the people. Depp's Wonka was weird for the sake of being weird. A man-child who wanted the love of his daddy. WTF? It was like Depp was just trying to be as strange as possible because he could. Charlie was a nice boy, I'll say. I also couldn't get that song out of my head.

The Island: I liked it, apparently being one of only a dozen people that did. The marketing for this film was horrible; nobody knew what it was about. For action fans, the highway chase scene is worth the price of admission by itself. I will say this is the kind of movie that the more you think about it, the more you pick it apart and have questions.

Sky High: Had the potential to be better, but wasn't bad for a Disney flick. Kelly Preston looks good in a superhero outfit. Kurt Russell is looking old. It might be time for him to start playing someone's grampa instead of their dad. Great supporting cast including Bruce Campbell, Dave Foley and Lynda Carter.

Wedding Crashers: not what I expected. I thought raunchy comedy and was given a romantic picture. There were funny parts and Vaughn was great, but who really talks like that?

The 40 Year-Old Virgin: funniest film I've seen in quite some time. Better than Crashers, in my opinion. Carrell did the right thing by not making his character a complete social retard. He's a virgin, deal with it, he's saying. Carrell looks like a cross between Griffin Dunne and Luke Wilson.
