Michael,

I must tell you that I do like your guy. Next to Heward he has more in common with David than any of the other candidates. He is simply not leadership material. A leader takes a stand based on what he believes in, not based on which way the wind is blowing. And he keeps his position when the wind changes even though it may cause him the race. Mr. Prentice just seems to be riding the fence too much for me to have any confidence in his ability to lead a party.

Mr. Prentice loves to pander to the anti-Orchard sentiment by saying the he and Mr. Orchard cannot be further apart on sovereignty. However both support increased spending on Canada’s military and both say they are in favour of an amiable yet independent relationship with the US so where is the chasm of which he speaks.

Mr. Prentice often refers to Mr. Orchard’s foreign affairs policy as ‘Fortress Canada’. This sound byte could not be further from the truth. Mr. Orchard is more vested in free and fair international trade than Mr. Prentice will ever be. Free trade is crucial to Canadian Agriculture. Free trade, however, is a principle. NAFTA is a document. As a lawyer, Mr. Prentice should understand the difference. But it’s so much easier to jump on the deep blue train and ride the fear-mongering wave of the neo-cons.

Mr. Prentice was prepared when he first announced his candidacy to kick Mr. Orchard out of this party for being a socialist. I noticed that the document on his web site where I read this was removed when Mr. Prentice saw the momentum in Mr. Orchard’s campaign. And then at the first debate he comes out with a left wing policy about four years of state funded university. Of course, when he realized what he’d done he toned it down, much like his support of merger with the Alliance. A year or so ago he was merger friendly and then when he realized that wouldn’t wash in this race he decided he just wanted to ‘turn down the temperature’.

And quite frankly, I simply don’t agree with this ‘bachelors degrees for prosperity’ policy. Aside from already adding to the elitist reputation of the party by devaluing the contribution of citizens with less than post-secondary education, there is already a glut of unemployed university graduates in our society. This country needs to start making things again. Like to old saying goes, nothing happens until something gets built. I challenge you to show me a working economy that’s based solely on knowledge workers. But hey, its a chance to score points with the youth so lets just ignore the fact that the theory doesn’t hold water.

And with respect to you confusion on Mr. Orchard’s policy, the idea is that when you are on the extreme right you must move left to get to the center. So the grammatically correct statement would be a move left toward the center. I hope this clears up the apparent inconsistency.
