Story courtesy: News.com.au

AFTER a year of uncertainty, Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras continued to shine with a quarter of a million onlookers witnessing a parade with strong political undercurrents.

While anti-war slogans were popular among the parade's 140 glitzy floats, reform of NSW laws relating to homosexuals was the most prominent theme three weeks ahead of a state election. Leading the pack was the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, whose float was inspired by Labor's 1970s campaign slogan "It's Time".

Supported by a band of marchers donning T-shirts declaring: "We're here, we're queer and we vote", the float led a procession of glammed-up drag queens, fairies and men and women dressed tough in studded leather. Lowering the age of consent for gay males from 18 to 16 was among the demands, as was enabling same-sex couples to access IVF treatments and adoption.
