I did read a book on this topic a while ago and it too was written by a former catholic priest. As hard as I try I can't remember author and title but James Carroll doesn't ring a bell. I borrowed this book from the father of a former colleague and can't look it up anymore.

(2 hours later) Well, I just looked up James Carroll. The book I read was published much earlier and I read it in the early 1990s. I found some very entertaining reviews of Constantine's Sword on amazon.com. It seems Carroll's historical accuracy is slightly flawed, but then one never knows how qualified the reviewers are.

He can have anti-German feelings all he wants as long as they won't taint his perception of ancient history. It just seems kind of strange to me to develop anti-German feelings in the 1950s/60s, I used to think the 1930s/40s lent themselves much more to this purpose. Anyway, the bio I found suggests Carroll was an Airforce brat educated at an American highschool in Wiesbaden. At the time Carroll went to highschool US military personel and their families lived very separate from the German population. The military had their own housing, shops, schools, sports and recreational facilities, most of the personel hardly ever left the military base.

Maybe its my perception of his writing that makes him seem a tad Anti-German. And being a Catholic I thought he'd NEVER stop confessing and get to the point!: D

Yes, I would agree with his flawed historical perspective. To see the way he paints it, its truly a MIRACLE that Judaism has survived. Thats not to say that things haven't been horribly difficult but still... I think he is very "agenda" in the book. Well with this subject it would be hard to stay objective but he is definately painting all the bad things European Catholics did in VERY bright colors while making you hunt and peck out the good things.

But its a good book overall.. and it is making me think and look at a great many things from a different perspective.. that alone is worthwhile.

Oh yeah and he isn't very fond of the Roman Empire either. He seems to equate them with Stalin... umm yeah okay whatever you say James!
