Subject: startled by a nutria

Until an hour ago I didn't even know nutrias existed.

The dog and I were heading into the yard when he suddenly came to a halt. He usually does that when the deer come through the yard, but I knew it was the wrong time of day for deer. I looked up the hill and there sat this creature that was as big as a beaver, and looked like a beaver without the beaverlike tail. It really startled me, and we must have startled it because it ran off into the woods. I had no idea what this creature was, so I did a net search of North American mammmals and found that it was a nutria.

Has anyone else seen a nutria or even heard of them? I'm familiar with a lot of critters but I've never seen one of these before.

I've seen them in the Animal Planet channel... Where are you that you get to see deers and nutrias in the yard?

Hard to believe but I live in a midwestern suburb. There's a small nature preserve about a mile from my house, and I think most of the critters wander over from there. The north end of our property is bounded by woods so they probably seek shelter there.

I guess I had better start watching Animal Planet just in case there are other mammals that have passed my radar screen.

Aww, that's a cute place to live! It'd be fun to wake up one day to find a "strange" creature around the house :)!

We have them here in the Pacific Northwest. I thought they were a huge well fed ghetto rat. Like a beaver they seem to live near freshwater sources or brackish sloughs. They compete with the ducks for bread when I go to feed the ducks and geese. I cannot say I care for them as they are the only rodent bigger than the cat sized Saudi rats. I do prefer them to opossums though as they do not seem as agressive as a 'possu'..they have webbed rodent feet and huge orange incissors..

I wasn't hallucinating....lol. It definitely wasn't as ugly as an oppossum. I'm sure after all the rain we've had that the woods are full of brackish water. It seemed to be headed toward the bird table, so maybe it was looking for food.

There are quite a few here, in South America, and believe me they are cuuuuuuuuuuuuute as buttons, and their fur is sooooooo soft and warm. They are adorable!

Wow, they have them in South America, too. They must be even more prevalent than I read about. I'm still amazed that I never knew they existed.

CUTE? They look like a hug and I mean huge rat...but then some people think rats are cute.

You are right about the fur. Here in the US Pacific Northwest they were hunted almost to extinction because of the very soft fur.

Now I think Capybaras are cute..I wonder if what she saw was a chupacabra! DO you have those huge patagonian anteaters in Uruguay or are they just in Argentina? I would assume you had them because of the range lands you have.

Ok, I am one of those weird people who do like rats :). Sorry! ;)
No, really, I find them "cute" but don't "like" to have them around because I know what a health hazard they represent.
And I still think nutrias are cute, Rawlin ;).
Oh well, nobody said I was normal :).
We do have "osos hormigueros" (anteaters), but they are not as huge, and they only survive in our wild forests called "montes". :)
Never saw one in real life, unless in the zoo, but I am not sure that counts as in "real, real life".

... who likes rats :) I too find them "cute" but don't want them in my house. But if I found one in my house, I would chase it away but not kill it. Nutrias are definetely cute and so are possums, which are not rodents but marsupials. When possums see you approach, they'll "freeze" and let you pet them. The reason so many of them get hit by cars is that they often freeze in the middle of the roadway upon approach by a vehicle.

Osos hormigueros are beautiful creatures. I've seen them in zoos and would love to play with one some day!

Possums are soooo cute with those big eyes!! Never saw one in real life, though :(. Poor creatures, being ran over... brrrrrr.
I know 90% of the people here and everywhere will jump all over me for this, but I find it nice that you chase the rat away from your house but that you wouldn't kill it :).

An anecdote. I once went out with a guy... it was not a date and yet he thought I was bedazzled by him (really... not!) and was playing the "macho" guy to impress me. We went for a walk by the rambla, which is a large street along the seaside, a very public place. Anyway, there there was the "Baywatch"-like case, where they keep the rescue boats and other materials locked... and a rat came out from there. The guy and I were sitting on a bench over the rambla, and the rat went straight to us and got under the bench when we were sitting.
I saw her coming and told him: "look, a big rat" and the "machisimo" guy ;) started yelling and stepped on the bench, almost crying. I couldn't stop laughing at the scene! People asked if something was wrong: I told them it was a rat, and they all couldn't understand how that big tall guy was yelling while I was so "cool" about the rat underneath us. I don't mind if people are scared of spiders, rats or dogs. It's ok either way. But it was hilarious to find the same guy who pretended to be very wild and brave, to be screaming like that at the sight of a rat.
No wonder the guy didn't brag in the way back :). That must have hurt his ego really bad.

I thought capybaras were other big rodents that we have, not the carpincho!!!! We call them carpinchos here, and have tons of them! Tons!!!!!!!
They are sooooo lovely!
Yes, their meat is delicious (so I've been told), but they are being protected from hunting here.
They are famous for putting on a pityful face when they are tracked, and I heard of a lot of people who have chased them and then gave up on the hunting when seeing them with their cute face looking so desperate.
There are tons in the zoo ten blocks away from home. They are adorable.

Up at grandpa's cabin in Colorado, if I'm thinking of the same thing that you described, he always said they were called "whistle pigs". They look just like what you said you saw. Wonder if it is the same creature. I haven't seen one anywhere else but at the cabin.

It is because of some kind of noise they make. You know how Guinea Pigs whistle, this thing does the same thing. But, it looks just like how you described your critter.

I've heard of them and seen pictures of them. They're considered food someplace, I can't remember where. I think it might be in Lousiana? They're cute little suckers. :)

I had dinner in the backyard and didn't even know it. *G* I wonder what kind of wine one serves with nutria?

At least one web site said that Nutria is spanish for Otter? So are they as big as otters? They do look cute with their big long wiskers. But they are still rodents, eeeeek.

Hi Dana! I have never heard of a nutria before. I thought it was something herbal at first:-) They look very similar to beaver or gopher seen around these parts of the the Great White North.
