Although I'm sure he could have done a brilliant job even then, I don't think they would have let Roger in Barbarellas when he was 12! There was a black DJ, big bloke as I remember, but I don't remember his name.

Wrote the lyrics to "Too nice to talk to" about Barbarellas. Do you remember they used to switch on all the lights and drag the record off exactly at twenty past two, and throw you out? Had some marvellous nights in there. Boy George on Paul Meeries's shoulders, carreering across the dance floor, the best Wire show I ever saw, and falling in love every 10 minutes with a head full of Blues!

The Beat toured a lot with the Clash, and although I became more pally with Mick and Topper, me and Joe got to have some very intersting conversations. We teased 'em a bit because they were becoming Rock Gods in the States, which made for some interesting dilemmas with the punk ethos. Every night we'd ask "are you going to play 'I'm so bored with the USA' tonight?!" They told us to fack orf, and they never played it! A couple of years later we found ourselves facing the same dilemma, and made no better a job of it!

My one problem with punk was that it seemed that too many upper and middle class kids were attempting to create a working class revolution, i.e. Anarchy is easier to call for if you have a safety net! Joe was keenly aware of this, we discussed it, and I think how Joe conducted the rest of his life showed how he had risen above it, and was indeed a concious man of great spirit.

The Clash were my favourites, the songs still make the hairs go up on the back of my neck. They were volatile on stage. If the first 2-3 songs went OK they would take off, but if it was a slow start it could crumble. They said that's why they liked us opening for them, because the crowd was always well and truly ready to go! David Bowie, David Byrne, and Sting told me the same, although I think it was a bit too much for Chrissie Hynde!

Beat goes on,

Dave
