Subject: And Out Come The Analogies....
In reply to: harry 's message, "Re: and another thing.." on 14:51:01 05/13/03 Tue

Look, i am not "passing over" the Riotgrrl movement, i merely don't see it as the progressive alternative that will lead women to the utopia of equality with men in Punk Rock. I just think there is a desperate need for a new female movement to arrive - one which advocates and promotes women issues towards a new audience of both men and women. It wouldn't even have to replace the Riotgrrl movement but co-exist alongside it. I see Riotgrrl as more of a stop-gap solution rather than a long-term one. To me, it seems that the Riotgrrl Movement are solely preaching to the converted when perhaps they should be delivering their message to the "infidels" i.e men. A kind of 'New Labour' style of re-branding would be beneficial i believe.

Another analogy would be to compare the lack of sexual harmony in Punk Rock today with the lack of general racial harmony in the Britain. The Segregration/Ghettoisation of our society ,as particularly evident in towns like Bradford and Burnley, has led to a tremendous amount of distrust and violence between the varying ethnic minorities, setting race relations back decades. Recent elections show the rise in popularity of those evil bastards, The National Front. In Punk Rock, i believe that women and men should be united with common goals to tackle the inequality and injustices of society instead of almost self-segregating themselves, creating a totally unnecessary "Us vs Them" situation.

So to summarise, i absolutely agree with a lot of what the Riotgrrl movement stands for but i just don't agree with the way they are going about it. The way that women are gonna make a difference is to start up so many more bands because at this moment there are not enough of them making an impact. In Britain i can't think of one all female punk-rock group. This is hardly surprising, when in our very city despite there being so many females into Punk Rock, there are virtually no girls in punk rock bands. So basically i believe it is up to women to promote themselves.

Hoping i haven't been too patronising:)

Strength through unity not self-segregation!

Kevin.
