Subject: The Goldfish Club

Bill Grice has asked me to post this, if you can help please contact me and I will pass the info on, John Cooper

I'm trying to obtain information on an old friend who served in the Fleet Air Arm throughout the war. He was a TAG, and a member of the Goldfish Club, having ditched three times during his service. His name was James Jukes, and left the service as a CPO.

I would be most grateful if you can provide any info at all about Jim, who sadly died of a heart attack many years ago.

Yours Aye,

Bill Grice

Bill also tells me that Jim Jukes was flying from HMS Hermes and was actually airborne when Hermes was sunk off Ceylon by the Japs in April 1942, presumably no carrier, no other way but to ditch. Jim apparently got his feet wet 3 times.

I am James Jukes granddaughter.

sadly my grandfather died when I was 2 ('76) but I have lots of fond memories of him and also lots of stories from his wife, son and daugher (my mother).

anyone wishing to contact me about my grandfather can do so.

Hi John,

Yes you have the right Bill Grice. I am so grateful for the info on Louise Parker, I'll contact her immediately. At last we are getting somewhere.

Many thanks,

Bill Grice has asked me to post a further message if anyone can help:

Hi John,

Still haven't heard from Louise Parker (Jim's granddaughter) I think she is very busy at the moment. However, I've just received some bits and pieces from Jim's brother Jack, an old school pal of mine. We now have Jim's official number, it is FX77343 so I wondered if this is any help in finding any further details of Jim in your own records.

Also Jack would like to find anything on Jim's close mate, also a TAG, they joined up together. His name was William Thomson and was taken prisoner after an Italian bombing raid. He wrote regularly to the Jukes family and Jack has sent me a couple of letters from Bill in the prison camp. The address so far as I can read it is
British Detention Camp
Laghouat
Algerie
Afrique du hord

In one letter dated 18/4/42 he mentions that the destroyer 'Havock' had been wrecked off the Tunisian coast, and all of the crew (250) had just arrived at the camp.

Jack tells me that Bill was later killed in USA. They never found the aircraft, but it is alleged that a fishing vessel saw an oil slick. Could you possibly have any info on Bill???

Thanks,

Bill Grice.
