Sunsword Quickpaw watched the vermin scouts rummage through the woods. They were probably the worst trackers he had ever seen, and he had seen quite a few. They made enough noise to wake a dead stoat and would lose their way in an empty room. Still, they had bows and probably knew how to use them.
One of the weasels happened to look up at a bad moment and glimpsed Sunsword peering out at them. "Hey," he cried, pointing at the tree Sunsword was hiding behind. "Get him!"
With a silent curse the young badger whirled and zigzagged through the trees, hoping to lose his pursuers in the vast reaches of Mossflower.
He was out of luck. One of the ferrets in the group strung his bow instead of running after their quarry, took aim at the dodging figure, and shot Sunsword through the footpaw, causing the badger to stumble. It was enough. Before Sunsword Quickpaw could regain his feet he had a half dozen daggerpoints biting into the flesh of his neck.
"Don't move, stripedog!"
Abby Treesap watched the woods anxiously, waiting for her adopted son to appear. It was not to be. Her other son, Dagger, came zipping out of the trees and shook his head gloomily. "Nothing. I guess the vermin got him. Those cursed patrols aren't any good at tracking, but there's so darn many of them. If he didn't get caught by one of them, he probably got caught by another. Besides, it's pretty hard to miss a badger, even a half grown one"
Soretooth Bloodclaw sat easily on what had once been the porch of the meeting place in Tumbledale. Woodlanders knew their homes well and few were brought in, but they couldn't fight forever. New vermin recruits stood drilling in the practice yard. Every now and then one of them would go off to lead a patrol through the forest to seek for and destroy resistance.
A comotion came from the gateway and he flicked his eyes on that direction without moving his body. One of his scouting parties had caught a half grown badger. It fought and struggled to no avail, causing mass damage in the ranks of his soldiers but unable to escape. "Bring him here." Soretooth never raised his voice. It sounded like steel being drawn, uncaring and dangerous. Nobeast had a voice like his.
The badger was dragged before him, still figting. Bloodclaw studied it for a moment. It was still a young creature. No scars marred the beast's body, though several harmless cuts were evident. Something was significant about this badger, though. It had a golden stripe instead of a white one, like the legendary Sunstripe. Fierce brown eyes burned with anger, tinges of red at the corners. The Bloodwrath resided in the creature before him and he knew that it feared no living thing.
"You won't submit easily," he said in his quiet tone. "But you will obey to save the lives of others." The badgers teeth bared in an angry growl. "Put him in the containment cellar. I will deal with him later."
